Learning How NHTSA Conducts Tests

One of the key vehicle safety ratings comes from the NHTSA. This is an important rating system because it is administered by the federal government. The NHTSA conducts its own tests and publishes results that can influence a vehicles overall safety rating.

NHTSA uses a five-star rating system. Vehicles are rated from one to five stars, and a higher number of stars indicates a better safety rating. A one-star rating indicates poor performance.

Among the tests that the NHTSA puts a vehicle through is the rollover test. This measures the likelihood of a vehicle being involved in a rollover. If the likelihood of a rollover is low, it is a factor in how high the vehicle’s overall safety rating will be.
